Panama has retained 32 percent of its original frontier forests (large tracts of relatively undisturbed old growth forest), the second largest percentage among Central America countries. Panama also has the largest percentage of protected land (17 percent) among Central America countries. However, despite these positive indicators, all of Panama's remaining frontier forests are now considered threatened. Panama currently has 561 threatened plant species, the most of any country in Central America.
