Honduras, home to subtropical and temperate forests, contains some of the most threatened forests in Central America. Land clearing to support rapid urban growth and huge banana plantations operated by United States-based corporations are major causes of deforestation in Honduras. Only 4.7 percent of the country's land is protected, one of the smallest percentages among all Central American countries.
