Liberia, located on the west coast of Africa, has lost most of its large rainforest tracts to timber harvesting and clearing for agriculture. Until the 1960s, timber production in Liberia was mainly for the domestic market; however, by the mid-1980s, Liberia was the third largest West African timber supplier to Europe. Due to political instability, the investment of capital for logging projects in Liberia—which require technical expertise and the use of machinery due to the country's steep terrain—waned during the 1990s.
