Rainforests in the central and northern regions of the Congo Democratic Republic, (formerly Zaire), occupy more than half of the country?s total area of nearly one million square miles. These rainforests represent 82 percent of the country?s original forest cover. About 47 percent of Africa?s dense tropical forests and 6 percent of the planet?s forests are in the Congo Democratic Republic (CDR). As a result of the long distances between CDR?s forests and commercial harbors, as well as a political crisis and armed conflicts in the region during the 1990s, most of the country?s forests remain relatively untouched.
