Exploding levels of wood and paper consumption, primarily in industrialized countries, is one of the primary factors driving global deforestation. More than half of the world's timber and nearly three-quarters of world's paper is consumed by a mere 22 percent of the world's population—those living in the United States, Europe and Japan.
